Endometriosis Treatments

Surgical treatments

Some cases of endometriosis require surgical treatment. At the American Hospital of Paris, surgeons specialized in endometriosis treat the condition with laparoscopic, robot-assisted, urological or digestive surgery. When endometriosis occurs in certain parts of the body, such as the abdominal wall or the ovaries, we offer scar-free percutaneous solutions that preserve the affected area.

Over the course of a multidisciplinary team meeting, doctors decide which surgical treatment is most appropriate. This choice is explained to patients by the referring doctor, and depends on:

  • Previous treatment efficacy
  • Pain intensity and type
  • Endometriosis severity and location
  • Patient’s or couple’s wishes regarding a future pregnancy

When endometriosis requires surgery, laparoscopic surgery is recommended.

Infertility treatment

When endometriosis is combined with infertility, treatment is delivered at the American Hospital of Paris by a multidisciplinary team comprising doctors specialized in assisted reproductive technology (ART). Treatment will also depend on input from psychologists and other practitioners specialized in pain and gynecological imaging.

Our ART department performs close to 2,000 in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures annually. IVF is only one of several infertility treatments and cannot be proposed systematically. To determine who can benefit from IVF, discussions, in particular concerning patients with endometriosis, take place twice a week during multidisciplinary team meetings. Based on these discussions, IVF is proposed to couples when appropriate.

The ART department also holds regular informational meetings for couples.
