A Lasting Legacy
The first bequest in the history of our institution was made by Ms. Ellen Frances Evans. Her generosity set in motion our institution’s unique philanthropic tradition. When Ms. Evans passed away in 1914, she bequeathed all of her assets to our Hospital. But her will, approved by the French courts, was only executed in 1918 when the Hospital was recognized by the French government as an institution of public benefit in gratitude for services rendered to France during World War I. Her bequest contributed to the construction in 1923 of the Memorial Building, which remains our Hospital’s centerpiece to this day.
Ms. Christiane Guerlain devoted 40 years of her life to the American Hospital of Paris. She helped create the American Hospital of Paris Volunteers’ Association in 1973, and was elected as a Governor in 1977. She was also one of our institution’s greatest benefactors and designated all of her donations to the acquisition of cutting-edge medical equipment. In keeping with her philanthropic choices and personal wishes, Ms. Guerlain’s bequest was also earmarked for the acquisition of latest-generation MRI machines and CT scanners, which are used daily to benefit patients in our new imaging center.
Michel and Huguette Zeller were loyal American Hospital of Paris patients who were deeply attached to our institution and its history, particularly during World War II. Having endured the German occupation and then witnessed the liberation by American troops, they were eternally grateful to the United States and its young soldiers. At the end of their lives, in recognition of the care they received at our Hospital, the Zellers chose to bequeath their entire estate to the American Hospital of Paris. In their eyes, our institution symbolized both medical excellence and the indestructible ties of friendship between France and the United States. True to their wishes, their bequest has been used for the construction, currently underway, of our new flagship building dedicated to the medicine of tomorrow.
Through these three testators’ stories, we wish to express our deepest gratitude to all those who have designated the American Hospital of Paris as a legatee, thereby passing our medical excellence on to future generations.
