Reinventing the university hospital: 5th annual Harvey Cushing Symposium at the American Hospital of Paris Monday, April 28, 2025
Press Release
- On April 28, 2025, the American Hospital of Paris will host its fifth annual Harvey Cushing Symposium entitled “Reinventing the University Hospital.” Participants will include more than 40 professors, physicians and experts from teaching hospitals, deans from prestigious universities and leaders from hospitals around the world
- ·Three topics will be explored: the partnership with the patient, the role played by university hospitals in local communities, and the training of future healthcare professionals.
- The symposium is divided into two parts: in the morning, experts will take part in small group discussions, and in the afternoon, a public conference on the key takeaways of the morning sessions will open to the general public (reservation required).
Held annually since 2019 at the American Hospital of Paris, the Harvey Cushing Symposium offers a unique venue for international experts to discuss scientific and medical issues. Inspired by the legacy of the pioneering neurosurgeon Harvey Cushing, it addresses innovative and cross-disciplinary questions while strengthening partnerships between university hospitals.
According to Professor Robert Sigal, Chief Executive Officer of the American Hospital of Paris, “The relationship between patient and doctor needs to be less one-sided. The doctor is no longer the only knowledgeable person. It is time to make patients’ voices heard, by allowing them to become an active partner (…) in healthcare. Medicine must be not only participative and personalized, it must also be predictive and preventive so as to build a therapeutic alliance."
In the face of today’s rapidly changing healthcare system and in a world where artificial intelligence and innovation are becoming omnipresent, the university hospital must evolve and create the conditions for disruptive change. This year’s symposium will address three strategic areas:
● Workshop 1: From Paternalism to Partnership: Helping the patient to become a key player in the care pathway. Discussions will explore trust in data and patient involvement in innovation (AI), as well as ethical considerations and how patients contribute to prevention strategies.
● Workshop 2: The University Hospital in the City: Reinforcing the hospital’s local impact and adapting care to the needs of the population. This workshop will explore how university hospitals can go beyond their traditional focus on specialized care to become active players in their communities, by collaborating with primary care providers and engaging with local organizations. Discussions will also address how to prioritize prevention over curative care.
● Workshop 3: Future Healers, Future Leaders: Preparing a new generation of healthcare professionals by incorporating innovation, leadership and empathy. This workshop will address the urgent need to train future healthcare professionals to lead systemic transformation. It will explore how to integrate emerging technologies like AI while ensuring empathy and trust remain at the core of medical practice. Discussions will also focus on developing leadership skills and managing change.
