Summer Academic Series 2023

From Monday July 10th through Wednesday July 12th, the American Hospital of Paris hosted the Summer Academic Series, “A Cutting-Edge Approach to Reconstructive Surgery.” This three-day course was organized in collaboration with the Columbia University Irving Medical Center and focused on multidisciplinary aspects of reconstructive and plastic surgery. The Summer Academic Series program allowed participants to take a deep-dive into:

• psychological and ethical topics,
• the legal nuances of plastic surgery in France,
• the use of artificial intelligence and facial recognition,
• understanding fat banking and its role in reconstruction,
• research and innovation in craniofacial surgery,
• facial transplant,
• surgical missions in wartime,
• the use of anesthesia in plastic surgery,
• and explanations of procedures including craniofacial surgery, tissue engineering, facial feminization, breast reconstruction, facial reconstruction including skin grafts, flaps and the use of tissue expanders.

Participants were welcomed to ask questions and engage with each of the American and French expert presenters.

On the final day of the Summer Academic Series, course participants were able to observe surgical procedures performed live by Dr. Patrick Bui and Dr. Christophe Lepage and transmitted directly to the AHP Auditorium. In this way, participants were able to view the surgical procedures as though they were directly next to the surgeons in the operating room.
