New excellence-oriented care pathway for the first 1,000 days
Press Release
January 28, 2025 – The American Hospital of Paris is reorganizing its units dedicated to women’s and children’s health to offer an excellence-oriented care pathway. The pathway will focus on the specific needs of mothers and babies throughout the first 1,000 days, from a child’s conception to their second birthday. This approach consists in providing safe, comprehensive, multidisciplinary medical services in a continuum of transversal care that includes assisted reproductive technology, early prenatal testing, maternity, neonatology and pediatric care.
Many scientific studies have proven that the first 1,000 days of a child’s life are a crucial period for their physical and cognitive development, with repercussions on both physical and mental health. In 2021, the French government made the first 1,000 days a top public health priority. The reorganization of the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health at the American Hospital of Paris is integral to fulfilling that priority. To guarantee each child benefits from the best ongoing healthcare, the Hospital’s various structures and departments cooperate with each other to provide personalized support and continuity of service.
“Ensuring overall support for the first 1,000 days is a true challenge. This crucial period of life requires having access to all of the necessary medical expertise within a single structure. The challenge also consists in organizing care in order to define and offer a completely personalized pathway. Because the American Hospital of Paris has all of the requisite assets and infrastructure, we are one of the only hospitals in France currently able to implement this type of strategy,” explains Professor Patrick Rozenberg, who was appointed chairman of the French National Board of Gynecologists and Obstetricians (CNGOF) as from January 1, 2025. Multidisciplinary Expertise Ensuring Continuity of Care within the Hospital The American Hospital of Paris’s has its own assisted reproductive technology (ART) center, which includes a laboratory and clinical care unit. The center was one of the first of its kind in France when it was created in 1993. It is credited with facilitating one of the earliest ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) pregnancies and performs up to 2,000 egg retrieval procedures annually – more than any other center in the country. In just a few years, it became one of France’s most well-equipped ART centers, known for its use of innovative techniques and processes.
The Hospital’s Fetal Medicine Unit is the only private structure among the 48 fetal medicine units authorized in France. Created in 2004, the center oversees in utero prenatal testing and in vitro preimplantation testing, in compliance with legislation. It is at the cutting edge of innovation, promoting methods like the One-Day Test and non-invasive prenatal testing. The center’s mission is to help couples and medical teams analyze, make decisions and monitor pregnancies in the event of a fetal malformation or hereditary risk. The Hospital continues to innovate with fetal ultrasound and AI-powered solutions that improve testing accuracy and provide results within 24 to 48 hours.
The maternity and neonatology unit, with 800 to 1,000 births annually, has been completely reorganized to harmonize practices and implement common protocols. The American Hospital of Paris has the human skills, medical expertise, and full diagnostic and
testing infrastructure necessary to ensure the highest level of safety for women. Safety in the delivery room is reinforced by a pediatrician, who is present around the clock, and critical care physicians specialized in neonatal medicine are systematically available to intervene immediately if a newborn is in distress. By U.S. standards, the maternity ranks at maternal care level III. This means it can admit mothers-to-be with obstetric risk factors or co-morbidities.
